For the past year and a half some of our members from Quest Farm have come faithfully every Thursday to help clean the sanctuary. The world around us would say these are handicapped adults some may call them mentally retarded.
But, these faithful men and women have volunteered each week to vacuum the sanctuary and clean around the pews.
We thought it would be nice to host a luncheon in their honor one Thursday. The best Thursday was last week. There were 30 people who descended on the sanctuary and cleaned for an hour.
Then the reward came. Valli Givens, our church hostess, prepared a sumptous meal for these hard working friends. The lasagna (one of my favorites darn, I missed it) and salad were served to these willing workers.
After dessert, somebody got the idea to do a line dance. I really think that was a part of the plan all along. The next thing you knew, Valli was leading a couple dozen exceptional adults around the fellowship hall in a line dance.
Jack Carpenter, our building manager, told me the place was filled with music and laughter. He said "they loved every minute of it. They were so happy." "It just makes you feel good to be a part of something like this."
They were in church and a party broke out. The bible tells us heaven is a place of great celebration. Seems to me as though heaven came down while a group of special needs adults did a line dance.
I wonder if we were more open to the Holy Spirit, if there would not be more parties in church. I think so. I'm just glad to be part of a church family where everyone can make a contribution and where a line dance just might break out anytime. |
